Formerly of District 8, Miriam Day was only four when her brother was Reaped. She doesn't remember much about him. His name was Mason, he was handsome and soft spoken, and he was more talented with painting than he was with wielding weapons to murder other teenagers. All and all, not someone who was expected to survive very long. And yet the games that year were full of surprises. Somehow he made an alliance with a Career from District Two and made it almost to the end of the game before said ally turned on him. His death was one of the more vicious of the game. Mason's partner was Bethany Lestan, who went on to win that year with a mix of brutality, cunning, and a very Capitol flair for the dramatic.
A year later, Bethany stopped in District 8 during her victory tour and quietly adopted Mason's little sister. Miriam has lived in complete luxury ever since. Though she doesn't attend school, Miriam has been educated in every subject that catches her interest by a variety of tutors over the years and spends most of her time following her adopted mom around at Bethany's gym. Inevitably she's escorted by her enhanced protection dog, Barnaby. He's a Mutt that looks and acts like a regular dog right up until you mess with Miriam, which is when things get nasty. Bethany spent a considerable amount of money on Barnaby and sees him as a safer option than a bodyguard - he ca't be bribed or threatened - and also insurance. After all, Miriam and Barnaby are seen as a set. If her mom's bribes and scheming eventually fail and Miriam gets Reaped as a Tribute, then Bethany has cause to make sure that Barnaby will stick with her through the game - which would be a huge and frankly unfair advantage for Miriam.
Not that she's training for the games. If asked, Miriam claims she's working to become her mom's publicity manager. Really this just gives her an excuse to get underfoot and bother everyone. She's slowly becoming a jack of all trades as it concerns the Hunger Games. She knows most of the Capital victors and a whole lot of people involved with the games. Miriam is smart and canny, and knows how to make a good impression. She's been subject to her share of press over the years and has her share of fans. The world she lives in is dangerous and above all, Miriam is a survivor.
